If you are a collector of Arts and Crafts lighting and decorative pieces then William Benson will need no introduction to you. But if you are only just discovering the simple beauty of Arts and Crafts then here is a little history about this innovative designer and creator.
William Benson certainly had a love of art and design,a flair for hands-on metal work and an interest in new technology. Opening his first workshop in 1880, he began producing beautiful creations combining graceful curves and simple organic shapes. A close friendship with William Morris helped cement WAS Benson’s place in the Arts and Crafts movement. His first work included furniture and decorative pieces such as fire place accessories and tableware.
He soon progressed to opening premises in New Bond Street, London. Benson marketed himself as an electrical engineering company and often advised on lighting schemes in churches and public buildings.
In 1893, William Benson electrified Standen – built by Philip Webb in East Sussex, now owned by the National Trust. Fine examples of his lighting can still be seen there today along with key pieces in the V&A Museum in London.
Benson’s distinctive pieces – including his chandeliers and table lamps are increasingly collectable and are in high demand worldwide. We are always looking for examples of Benson’s original work which we will carefully restore to ensure that these pieces can be kept and displayed for future generations.
