Recently, we made our first and long-awaited visit to Standen House in West Sussex. This beautiful Arts and Crafts house is in outstanding original condition and we spent a lovely half day exploring. Designed by architect Philip Webb, work was started in 1891 on behalf of James and Margaret Beale. Standen house is famous for being one of the first country houses to be electrified and this work was carried out by the talented designer WAS Benson. A close friend and colleague of William Morris – a key figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement- Benson’s lighting was installed in Standen and fine examples can still be seen in many rooms.
Martin is a keen collector and restorer of lighting by William Benson so I can only compare him to a small child in a sweet shop as he walked from room to room. Fortunately, the Beale family were so happy with the decor of their new home that little has been changed. The original William Morris wall coverings, wall hangings and furniture are the perfect backdrop to the WAS Benson ceiling lights, lanterns and lamps. Each room is truly a delight to behold. One of the aims of the Arts and Crafts movement was to take craftsmanship back to basics and thereby promote the beauty of the artist’s skills in a more honest and simple way. A deliberate change from the fancy styles and grandeur of Victoriana. Due to this, the house really does feel like a comfortable family home which undoubtedly is part of its charm.
If you have an interest in the Arts and Crafts Movement we would absolutely recommend a visit to Standen. Situated in East Grinstead, West Sussex and just 45 minutes from Brighton. The house is set in 12 acres which overlook the Ashdown forest. The thought behind the creation of Standen was that the house and garden are seen as a whole with the concept of ‘outdoor rooms’ so the grounds really do feel like an extension of the house. Standen is a National Trust property and you can find more information via this LINK
We are fortunate to be able to offer for sale many of the WAS Benson lamps which are on display at Standen. Some are for sale in our online shop while others are awaiting restoration. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss a particular item.
