A question we are often asked is how do I install and assemble my antique light?  Many of our lights consist of two parts – a glass shade and a metal gallery or shade carrier.  This includes art deco chapel lights and  art nouveau vaseline glass pendant lights.  This style of manufacture is popular as it enables a mix of materials in the light fitting, with the metal gallery incorporating the bulb holder and hanging hook.  We also supply the hooked ceiling plate and suspension chain so that you have everything you need to install.

But how do these components fit together? The glass shade will have an opening with a lip.  The metal gallery, which is normally made from brass or copper will sit over the opening and screws around the neck will then be screwed into place, underneath the lip of the shade.

We always supply an installation guide for guidance and strongly recommend you employ the services of an electrician to install your light and would advise you pass this guide to them.  In case you have mislaid this guide, a copy can be found below.

Installation Guide – Glass Light with Dome Shaped Gallery

Do not lift holding the electric cable (B) alone.  This light should be supported using the suspension chain (C) provided.

Fitting the Hooked Ceiling Plate

The ceiling plate (A) will support the weight of the light and the suspension chain will be hooked directly onto this once fitted. The central hole allows the cable (B) to pass through.

Bulbs – your light is fitted with a B22 bayonet bulb holder.  We recommend LED bulbs for all our lighting.  You may fit a dimmable bulb if preferred.

Galleries are removed for safe transportation.

To attach the shade to the gallery (D), carefully place it on top of the glass shade (E) ensuring that the fixing screws are sufficiently open to allow safe placement. Ensure that the gallery is sitting level and flat onto the top of the shade.  Gently screw in all screws until they are lightly but firmly touching the glass.  The lip of the shade will hold the gallery in place so do not over-tighten.

Cleaning instructions

Your glass shade will only require gentle cleaning.  Dust shade & gallery with a soft cloth.  Occasional cleaning of the glass shade in warm soapy water may be required if your light is hung in a smoky or greasy environment.

The gallery may become hot when the light is switched on.  Ensure the light has been switched off for a minimum of 10 minutes before cleaning.

To remove the shade, ensure the light is switched off.  Supporting the shade, carefully loosen the screws holding the gallery in place until the shade is free.
