When was the age of Art Deco?
The introduction of Art Deco style began just before the start of the First World War but it wasn’t until the 1920’s that it really gained momentum. A famous exhibition in Paris In 1925 resulted in the name Art Deco – Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes. The Art Deco movement continued to grow in popularity until the start of the Second World War. Therefore the Art Deco Period incorporates the 1920’s and 1930’s.

There is evidence of original Art Deco architecture and design in cities across the world and London has some fine examples but it is most evident in Western Europe, particularly France and in the USA.
How can I recognise Art Deco style?
Art Deco style was deliberately modern with sleek geometric lines and patterns. Cubist designs were favoured and rich materials used to represent luxury and the progress of modern technology. It was a deliberate move away from the Art Nouveau period which preceded it and favoured natural forms and the flowing lines of plants and flowers. Simple shapes were favoured.
Two of the most iconic Art Deco buildings in the world are the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building in New York. In London, fine examples can be seen in the Apollo Theatre, Battersea Power Station and Claridge’s Hotel in Mayfair. Once you start looking for examples of Art Deco, you will spot it in many public buildings in all large cities.
